Tickets are now on sale for Almost Maine! The Amity High School Theater Department is proud to present the heart warming romantic comedy Almost, Maine. On a Friday night in the middle of winter, residents of a small, mythical town in far northern Maine are falling in and out of love at an alarming rate. Knees are getting bruised; hearts are getting broken...but the bruises heal and hearts mend-almost-in what has been described as a "charming midwinter night's dream." Almost, Maine will leave you spent from laughter and thoroughly warmed from the inside out..

The cast includes; Matthew Burkhart, Nina Yasick, Ted McNulty, Ali Kramer, Peter Charney, Rachel Skalka, April Rock, Alida Ballou, Kara Burgess, Bowen Kirwood, Heidi Schulte, Kate Poland, and Carson Adair. With crew members Sloane Churchill, Zachary Arons, Ellie Flamenhaff and Andrew Gusciora.

Performance Dates : December 9th and 10th at 8pm at the Amity High School Auditorium. Scotland Here we come!

The Amity High School Theater Department under the direction of Robert Kennedy has been selected to perform in the world’s largest and most prestigious arts festival in the world as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF). Each August, Edinburgh, Scotland becomes the most magical and exciting place on earth as performing artists from all over the world come to Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The whole city becomes a stage and visitors can view performances that take place everywhere from playgrounds to conference rooms to city parks and churches. The Fringe Festival includes over 1800 different performances of music, theater, dance and comedy during its three week run.

Amity High Schools performance will be showcased at the AHSTF venue in Edinburgh in August of 2012. Amity High School, long recognized for its entertaining and innovative productions, was selected by the AHSTF Board of Advisors to represent the United States as part of the 2012 AHSTF program. The Board reviews all completed applications and recommendations. This year Amity was one of 50 schools chosen from over 2000 nominated applicants. The students will participate in a trip of a lifetime including a stay in London where they will tour the city, see a West End show, visit the birthplace of William Shakespeare and experience London during the 2012 summer Olympics. Next, the students are off to Edinburgh Scotland to perform on stage at the Fringe Festival. While in Edinburgh students will visit the highlands, tour castles and museums and attend plays and shows from around the globe.

As you can imagine the Amity High School drama students, their parents, and teachers are heavily involved in fundraising activities to finance their two-week adventure in Scotland and England. The drama club will be on a yearlong fund raising drive with many planned events including; A Haunted House, Children’s Theater production, Improv Comedy Night, Murder Mystery Dinner, A Cabaret and they will be creating a program where the community can sponsor a seat in the auditorium complete with an engraved name plaque. into celebrity headlines, and Roxie becomes the toast of Chicago -- until other crimes

(Well, sort of) The incredible cast of Beatlemania the tribute is coming to the Amity for a one night benefit performance with all the proceeds going to the Amity Performing Arts Department. Amity Presents the Powerful Drama BANG BANG YOU'RE DEAD

The Amity Creative Theater presents its fall production BANG YOU'RE DEAD by William Mastrosimone December 7th-10th at 9am for Amity students only and for the community on December 10th, 2010 at 8pm.

Presented to the student body as part of Amity High Schools advisory program; Bang Bang You're Dead is a one act play written by William Mastrosimone in 1999 to raise awareness of bullying, school violence and its causes. According to Mastrosimone, it “is a drama to be performed by kids, for kids” for free. The plot focuses on Josh, a high school student who murders his parents and five classmates. It is strongly based on the events surrounding Kip Kinkel's shootings of his parents on May 20, 1998 and 27 of his classmates at Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon on May 21, 1998. The first production of this play took place at Thurston High School and many of the student actors in the play had been victims in the shooting. As of October 2009, the play had been performed over 25,000 times. While the play deals with the subject of school violence there is no strong language in the play and no guns or weapons appear on stage at anytime. If there were a parental rating on the show it would be "PG". Following the play there will be a question and answer session with the director, cast, crew and members of the Amity Counseling Services Department.

John Jorge on Broadway!

John Jorge makes his Broadway debut at the National High School Music Theater Awards. Here is Johns solo performance of "Strangers Like Me" from Tarzan the Musical. John made all the way to the finals in this competion! John currently can be seen in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee opening at Amity High School on July 30th. Congratulations to John!

The award winning Amity High School Theater Department will present its Fall production And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank for a public performance benefiting the Shoa Foundation on Saturday December 12th at 8pm. And Then They Came for Me is a unique theatrical experience: a multimedia play that combines videotaped interviews with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during World War II. Ed was Anne Frank's first boyfriend, and she wrote about him in the beginning of her now-famous diary. Eva Schloss was the same age as Anne Frank and lived in the same apartment building in Amsterdam. Her family went into hiding the same day as the Frank family. And like the Frank family, they were betrayed. On Eva's 15th birthday, her family was arrested by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps. Eva and her mother survived, and after the war her mother married Otto Frank (Anne's father). Part oral history, part dramatic action, part direct address, part remembrance, the ensemble-driven And Then They Came for Me breaks new ground and has been acclaimed by audiences and critics in world-wide productions.

The Amity Production is directed by theater arts teacher Robert Kennedy, with Costumes by Julie Chevan and Lighting Design by Dan Hassenmayer. The student cast features Amity senior Dylan Napolitano as Ed, juniors Kimberly Simon as Eva and Taylor Sullo as Anne Frank. The cast is rounded out by seniors: Ken Adair, John Jorge, Lauren Gray, junior: Pat Villano, sophomore: Rachel Skalka and freshman: Peter Charney.

The play will be presented during the school day to all of the Amity students as part of schools Advisory program, which engages the students in important social issues and encourages discussion as part of the school’s curriculum. The entire student body will attend performances of the play and afterwards participate in a Q and A session with members of the cast and local Holocaust Survivors.

There will be one performance open to the public on Saturday December 12th, 2009 at 8pm at the Amity High School Auditorium. Admission is free but donations will be accepted to the Shoa Foundation; a non for profit group headed by Steven Speilberg that works with a global network of partners to provide an array of valuable educational services about the holocaust that reach educators, students, and the general public around the world. Seating is on a first come first served basis.

These performances are made possible by a grant from the Jamie Hulley Fund for the Arts. A perennial supporter of the Amity Theater department, The Jamie A. Amity High School Theatre Department Receives Moss Hart Award for Best High School Production in New England

Woodbridge, CT – The department of theatre at Amity High School has been awarded the New England Theatre Conference’s (NETC) Moss Hart Award for best high school play, for its 2008 production of The Boys Next Door by Tom Griffin. Rob Kennedy theater arts teacher, will receive a plaque commemorating the award at the NETC’s annual conference and awards banquet on Nov. 14, 2009 in Sturbridge, MA.
This is the first ever Moss Hart win for the Amity theatre department. There are five divisions that compete for the awards: professional, college, secondary, children and youth, and community theatre. Amity was deemed the overall winner in the secondary division over hundreds of other high schools in New England. The runner up was a production of the musical Cabaret from Acton-Boxborough Regional High School  in Acton, Massachusetts
The annual award is given in memory of Hart, an American playwright and director who dedicated his life to theatre. The award recognizes outstanding theatrical productions throughout New England, in the areas of human courage and dignity, strong literary and artistic merit, and productions that are fresh, imaginative, and creative.
According to the NETC website, the award, “seeks to encourage artistic growth and the highest standards of excellence in theatre.”
The play The Boys Next Door takes place in a communal residence in New England, where four mentally handicapped men live under the supervision of an earnest, but increasingly "burned out" young social worker. Mingled with scenes from the daily lives of these four, where "little things" sometimes become momentous and often very funny, are moments of great poignancy. The play reminds us that the handicapped want only to love and laugh and find some meaning and purpose in life just like everyone else.
The fall 2008 production featured direction, scenic and lighting design by Rob Kennedy, with costumes by Amity English teacher Julie Chevan, set construction by Bill Battaglia of the Amity Tech-Ed Department and Scenic painting by Amity Art teacher Jessica Zamachaj.
The cast featured Mytra Haerizadeh, Connor Deane, Jennifer Russo, Sam Pollock and Pat Villano of Orange, CT. Ethan Sachs, Jake Honig, Kimberly Simon, Benjie Ding, Mallory Stratton, Tristan Shadd- Simmons, Shelby Komisar and Melody Hahm of Woodbridge CT. The student producer of the The Boys Next Door was Hannah Jenson. The show was stage managed by students Veronica Wolanin with Molly Sachs and Amie Sandillo.
The play was presented as part of Amity’s Advisory program, which engages the students in important social issues and encourages discussion as part of the schools curriculum. The entire student body attended four performances of the play and afterwards participated in a Q and A session with members of the cast and faculty members from the Amity Special Education Department. The student actors also raised two thousand dollars and donated the proceeds to Connecticut Special Olympics.

This new concept incorporates the ideas brought from the marching arts and moves them to the stage for an entertaining production of music, dance and musical theater! The Amity Performing Arts Department and The Amity Creative Theater presents Jonathan Larson's award winning Rock Musical RENT. Based on the Giacomo Puccini opera La Boheme, RENT tells the story of young artists struggling to survive and create while enduring poverty and illness in New York City’s Lower East Side. Hailed as a revolutionary rock opera, it won both a Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Musical. After a 12-year run on Broadway, RENT closed in September 2008.

Amity’s will be the first high school production of RENT in Connecticut.

Show dates are March 27 and 28 and April 2, 3 and 4 at 8 p.m.
